Oh boy--the hills, the lack of calories...
I find that when I start to get low on fuel I first get irritable, and then apathetic. It's like I can't get smart enough to remember why I ever wanted to work hard in the first place! It sounds like your lack of calories really messed you up--and yet you pulled out such a great race. Your placing says it all.GetBackJoJohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12971771566518642672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2431778619067747592.post-74475037670419804522010-06-10T17:44:40.680-07:002010-06-10T17:44:40.680-07:00Nice job Ange! Great report - love reading about your races!

One of my friends told me a few years ago - that when you start to lose focus - you're bonking and get some calories NOW! I have to tell you that I got a little teary eyed at the end when I saw the picture of you running with your boys! :)

I also think it's a great strategy to break portions of a race down into little pieces. When I did my first HIM and I got to the run, I would just say, "get to the next mile, then you'll only have x miles left." And it worked! For me, I think it just makes things more manageable.Aimeehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17553067128072502179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2431778619067747592.post-5927483563068829202010-06-10T11:11:31.631-07:002010-06-10T11:11:31.631-07:00I'm with Beth here - do you usually race with ...I'm with Beth here - do you usually race with so few cals on the bike? 400 over the course of the ENTIRE bike leg??????? Way to dig deep!! you will remember this race forever and every race will be easier from this day onward :) Congrats..you should be proud of how you overcame obstacles. Matt Fit...Have you read Brain Training For Runners? Matt Fitzgerald. He writes in that book that our brains run on glucose and that when we're running low on glucose, the first thing to happen is that your brain gets those signals and then generates those feelings of fatigue... all that negative self-talk is your brains way of trying to shut your body down when it senses you're low on glucose. So next time, force down the gel and think about it in terms of keeping your head clear so you can make good smart decisions while you're racing. :) Great job out there pushing through though, Ange!Michelle Simmonshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10301323188060167291noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2431778619067747592.post-7335737003965277962010-06-10T08:19:32.025-07:002010-06-10T08:19:32.025-07:00Sounds like a massive bonk Angela!!! (I know this only because I've been there :) I just read an interview with Kelly Williamson (2nd woman pro at the race you just did) and she said she took 11 gels during that race (in addition to her sports drink w/calories) because she knew that tough of a course was going to require a lot of calories. CRAZY!!! Regardless, congrats on finishing it up and STILL winning your AG!!
